Can a mother receive benefit from chiropractic care during pregnancy? The answer is YES!!!
Chiropractic care has long been a proven & effective and safe form of care for expecting mother with various complaints. These symptoms can be attributed to a rapid increase of stress on the spine and pelvis throughout the course of pregnancy. Low back pain during pregnancy is extremely common. One study reports the incidence of low back pain of up to 69% of expecting mothers. The same study reports only 25% of these mother reporting symptoms to a health care provider and only a fraction of those receiving any form of treatment to alleviate their pain.
Obviously only treatment methods that ensure safety of the child should be considered, this is why Chiropractic care is perfect. In a small study of 17 expecting mothers with low back pain averaging a pain score of 6 (on a 1 to 10 with 10 being the most pain) at the end of the study the average pain score was reduced to 1.5 with adverse effects reported by 0 of the participants. An unknown benefit of Chiropractic care during pregnancy is its impact on labor and delivery. In a group of 170 child births the group receiving chiropractic care reported experiencing less back pain during labor. A Chiropractic technique known as the Webster Technique is specifically for treatment of intrauterine constraint. Intrauterine constraint can be the cause of breech birth and need for a cesarean section as a means of delivery. Treatment of a Chiropractor administering the Webster Technique has a reported access of 82% in relieving the musculoskeletal causes of intrauterine constraint. With benefits like these, it’s easy to see that all mothers-to-be and their children need chiropractic care. But don’t listen to me, read the opinions of these mothers.
