Quick answer

The MyoVision sEMG scan is a painless, non-invasive assessment that measures the electrical activity of the muscles on either side of your spine and, with a paired thermal scan, the temperature differences that point to nerve irritation. It takes a few minutes, uses no needles or radiation, and gives Dr. Jared Cohen, DC an objective baseline on visit one that is re-scanned to track progress.

What is the MyoVision sEMG scan and what does it measure?

The MyoVision sEMG scan is a surface electromyography assessment: a small handheld scanner is glided along both sides of your spine and reads the electrical activity of the muscles that hold you upright. Those readings are graphed in color, segment by segment, showing where muscles are working too hard, too little or unevenly from side to side.

Much of what stresses the spine is invisible from the outside. A disc or joint that is irritated makes the nervous system guard it with muscle tension, often long before you can point to exactly where it hurts. Surface EMG makes that guarding visible, which is why we use it at the start of every plan instead of relying on a five-minute exam and a guess.

A paired thermal scan adds a second layer. It rolls along the same path and maps skin temperature on each side of the spine. The nerves that control blood flow to the skin exit at each spinal level, so a persistent side-to-side temperature difference at a segment points to nerve irritation at that level.

What does a MyoVision sEMG scan reveal?

The scan does not diagnose. It measures. What it measures, though, answers the questions that matter most on visit one:

  • Hidden muscle tension. Segments where the paraspinal muscles are firing far above normal at rest — the body’s guarding response to an irritated disc or joint.
  • Side-to-side asymmetry. One side working much harder than the other, which usually means the spine is being pulled or held off-center.
  • Nerve stress along the spine. Thermal differences at a level that line up with the muscle findings and the exam.
  • Fatigue and under-activity. Muscles that have switched off after an injury and never switched back on — a common reason lower back pain keeps returning.
  • Which region leads. Whether a neck, mid-back or low-back pattern is the primary driver when several areas hurt.
  • A baseline for the whole plan. Numbers we can re-scan against, so progress is measured rather than assumed.

For patients with herniated discs, sciatica or headaches, the scan often shows the pattern that explains why previous care did not hold: the painful level was treated, but the compensating levels above and below were not.

How we use the scan on visit one and at re-scans

The scan is one of the four pillars of our first visit, and it is the pillar that gives us numbers. It takes only a few minutes and feels like light contact on the skin.

Visit one — we measure (and usually begin care)

  1. A real conversation. Where it hurts, what makes it worse, what you have tried, and what you want to get back to.
  2. A hands-on structural exam. Posture, range of motion, orthopedic and neurological tests that isolate the structure generating the pain.
  3. The MyoVision sEMG scan plus thermal scan. You stay fully clothed; the scanner glides down each side of the spine and the color graph is ready immediately.
  4. Digital X-rays, when indicated. The architecture — disc spacing, curves, alignment and wear — that the scan is reacting to.

Visit two — report of findings

Dr. Jared Cohen, DC walks you through your color graph alongside your exam and any imaging, explains what the readings suggest, and maps the plan across the 4R Method. Treatment begins on this visit. The 60-second spine assessment online gives us your Spine Score before you arrive.

Re-scans — proof, not guesswork

Because the scan is quick and painless, we repeat it at the end of each phase. A Repair-phase re-scan should show guarding dropping at the treated level; a Rebuild-phase re-scan should show the asymmetry evening out as stabilizers come back online. If the numbers are not moving, we change the plan — the scan keeps us honest.

Where the scan sits in the 4R Method

The 4R Method — Repair, Rebuild, Regenerate, Refine — depends on knowing when one phase is done and the next should begin. The scan is how we know.

  • Repair (3–5 visits a week for 4–8 weeks): the baseline scan identifies the guarded levels where spinal decompression and adjustments are aimed; a re-scan confirms the guarding has settled.
  • Rebuild (2–3 visits a week for 8–16 weeks): asymmetry and under-active segments guide physical therapy and posture correction; the re-scan shows the stabilizers coming back.
  • Regenerate and Refine: periodic scans at tune-ups catch a level starting to guard again before it becomes an episode.

Is the scan safe and reliable? Evidence and limits

The scan is completely safe. It reads electrical activity from the skin surface — nothing goes in, nothing comes out. No needles, no radiation, no shocks, and it is appropriate for children, pregnant patients and anyone who cannot have X-rays.

Surface EMG of the paraspinal muscles is a well-studied measure. An updated systematic review in the National Library of Medicine reports acceptable reliability of surface EMG for assessing paraspinal muscle function (PubMed), and altered paraspinal activity patterns are documented in people with chronic low back pain (PubMed). The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke notes that most back pain is evaluated clinically before imaging is needed (NINDS) — the scan is part of that clinical evaluation.

What the scan is not

  • It is not a diagnosis. Dr. Cohen interprets it alongside your history, exam and imaging.
  • It is not a treatment. It tells us where to focus and whether what we are doing is working.
  • It is not a replacement for X-rays or MRI when structure needs to be seen; it tells us whether and where imaging is worth ordering.
  • Readings can be influenced by recent exercise, caffeine, skin moisture and posture during the scan, which is why we standardize how it is taken.

Who should have a MyoVision sEMG scan?

Every new patient at The Spine and Wellness Center has one on visit one, whatever brought them in. It is especially valuable for patients in Coral Springs and Parkland who:

  • Have back or neck pain that keeps coming back despite previous care.
  • Hurt in several places and want to know which region is actually driving the pattern.
  • Are recovering from a sports injury or car accident and want objective progress tracking.
  • Want a baseline for their spine before starting a desk job, a training block or a new sport.
  • Prefer to see numbers and a graph rather than take a recommendation on faith.

If you have an existing MRI or X-ray, bring it. The scan, the exam and your imaging together give a far clearer picture than any one of them alone, and that picture is what your plan is built on.

Frequently asked questions

Does the MyoVision sEMG scan hurt?

No. A small handheld scanner is gently glided down each side of your spine while you stay fully clothed. It reads surface muscle activity through light contact — no needles, no radiation, no shocks — and the whole assessment takes only a few minutes.

What does the scan measure?

It measures the electrical activity of the muscles supporting your spine at each level and graphs it in color, highlighting hidden tension, nerve stress and side-to-side imbalance. The paired thermal scan maps temperature differences that point to nerve irritation. Together they give an objective baseline and a way to track progress.

Is the scan a diagnosis or a treatment?

Neither. It is an objective assessment that guides care. Dr. Jared Cohen, DC interprets your scan alongside your history, hands-on exam and any imaging to plan the right approach, and repeats it at the end of each phase to measure how your muscles are responding.

How often will I be re-scanned?

Typically at the end of each phase of the 4R Method — after Repair, after Rebuild — and periodically at Refine-phase tune-ups. Re-scans are quick and painless, and they are how we confirm the plan is working rather than assuming it is.

Is the scan safe during pregnancy or for children?

Yes. Surface EMG and thermal scanning read signals from the skin surface and use no radiation, so they are appropriate for pregnant patients, children and anyone who cannot have X-rays. They are often the only imaging-free way to get an objective look at the spine.

Is the MyoVision scan available near Parkland and Boca Raton?
