Volleyball Injury Treatment in Coral Springs & Parkland

From aching hitting shoulders and jumper's knee to net-side ankle sprains, our drug-free, sports-focused care helps youth and high school volleyball players in Coral Springs and Parkland heal the injury and fix the mechanics behind it.

Volleyball injury treatment at The Spine and Wellness Center is built for the young athletes who fill South Florida's club and high school courts — the spikers, setters, liberos and middles whose shoulders, knees and ankles take a pounding every practice. We treat the injury and the movement pattern behind it, without medication or downtime you don't need.

Medically reviewed by Dr. Jared Cohen, DC · Updated July 2026

Volleyball is deceptively demanding on a growing body. A single match can involve dozens of overhead swings, explosive jumps and hard landings, quick lateral cuts and repeated dives to the floor. Over a club season stacked on top of a school season, that volume adds up — and in youth and high school players, the growth plates, tendons and stabilizing muscles are still maturing. The result is a predictable set of overuse and acute injuries around the shoulder, knee, ankle, low back and hands. Our job is to calm the injured tissue, restore normal joint motion and strength, and retrain the mechanics of the jump and the swing so the same problem doesn't keep coming back.

Common Volleyball Injuries We Treat

Most of what we see in youth and high school volleyball players falls into a handful of recognizable patterns. Each one has a clear mechanism on the court and a conservative path back:

  • Shoulder & rotator cuff pain from the repeated overhead swing of spiking and serving
  • Jumper's knee (patellar tendinopathy) from thousands of jumps and hard landings
  • Ankle sprains from landing on a teammate's or opponent's foot at the net
  • Low back strain from repeated arching and trunk rotation while hitting
  • Finger & wrist injuries from blocking, setting and diving to the floor
  • Neck & upper-back tightness from constant overhead posture and tracking the ball

The overhead swing is the signature stress of the sport. Every serve and spike loads the rotator cuff and the muscles that control the shoulder blade, and when those tire or lose their timing, the shoulder starts to ache at the top of the swing. Jumper's knee follows the same overuse logic below the waist: the patellar tendon absorbs the force of every takeoff and landing, and without enough strength and recovery it becomes irritated and tender just below the kneecap. Ankle sprains, by contrast, are usually acute — a quick roll on a crowded net line — but how they're rehabbed determines whether balance and confidence come all the way back. According to the National Library of Medicine, ankle sprains are among the most common athletic injuries and are prone to recurrence when rehabilitation is cut short.

Jump Mechanics & Shoulder Mobility for Performance

Treating pain is only half the picture. The players who stay healthy are usually the ones who move well — and that's where our sports rehabilitation focuses once the acute injury settles. On the lower body, we look at how an athlete loads and lands the jump: whether the knees track over the toes, whether the hips absorb force, and whether landings are quiet and controlled or stiff and knee-dominant. Cleaning up landing mechanics reduces the repetitive strain that feeds jumper's knee and protects the ankle and ACL.

On the upper body, we assess shoulder mobility and the strength of the rotator cuff and shoulder-blade stabilizers. A hitter needs both a mobile shoulder to reach a high contact point and a stable one to decelerate the arm safely after contact. When mobility is limited or the stabilizers are weak, the swing borrows range from the wrong places and the shoulder or neck pays for it. We combine hands-on care to restore motion with a targeted strengthening plan so athletes can serve harder and hit higher with less risk. For South Florida's year-round club players, this off-court work is what makes a long season sustainable.

What to Expect

Your first visit starts with a sports-focused evaluation: we take a history of the sport, position and training load, then examine the injured area and the joints above and below it. From there we build a plan that usually blends several tools — chiropractic adjustments to restore joint motion, Graston Technique and soft tissue work to address adhesions, and cold laser or acoustic shockwave therapy to support tendon and tissue recovery. Alongside the hands-on care, we layer in progressive sports rehabilitation: mobility, strength and jump-landing drills that advance as the athlete improves. We coordinate return-to-play so young players build back their capacity before they're thrown back into full practice volume, and we keep parents and, when appropriate, coaches in the loop.

Volleyball Injury FAQ

Questions, Answered

What are the most common volleyball injuries in youth and high school players?
The most common are shoulder and rotator cuff pain from spiking and serving, patellar tendon irritation known as jumper's knee, ankle sprains at the net, low back strain from repeated arching and rotation, and finger or wrist injuries from blocking and setting. Most respond well to conservative, drug-free care when addressed early.
Can a chiropractor help with volleyball shoulder and knee pain?
Yes. Chiropractic care combined with sports rehabilitation addresses both the painful tissue and the movement pattern behind it. We treat the shoulder, knee, spine and surrounding joints, restore mobility and strength, and coach jump and landing mechanics so the problem is less likely to return.
How do you treat jumper's knee without surgery?
Jumper's knee, or patellar tendinopathy, usually responds to a progressive loading program paired with hands-on therapy. We often combine Graston Technique, cold laser and acoustic shockwave therapy with targeted strengthening and landing drills. Surgery is rarely needed when the tendon is loaded correctly over time.
How soon after a volleyball injury should my child be seen?
Sooner is better. Getting an ankle sprain, shoulder ache or knee pain evaluated within the first days helps calm inflammation, protect the tissue and start the right rehab before compensations set in. If there is severe swelling, deformity or inability to bear weight, seek urgent medical evaluation first.
Do you work with club and high school volleyball players near Parkland?
Yes. Our Coral Springs office on Coral Ridge Drive is minutes from Parkland, Coconut Creek, Margate and Boca Raton, and we regularly care for club and high school volleyball athletes across South Florida, with same-day appointments during the season.
Is volleyball injury treatment covered by insurance?
Coverage varies by plan. We accept most major medical insurance and will verify your benefits before you start. Call (954) 341-2256 to check your coverage.
